Computer setting Guidance

Work without computers in the present times seems quite impossible. But while computers have revolutionized the way in which we do things, there are many long-term effects associated with extensive and prolonged usage.

It is not uncommon for individuals to experience eye problems and discomfort such as headache, backache and fatigue from extensive computer use.
Ensure monitor screens are cleaner and crisper.

Buying Laptop Computers Guide : Basic Info and Bag Checklist

Laptops are portable, they’re stylish, and let’s face it: the opposite sex will think you more sophisticated when you’re suavely tapping out your latest blog entry at the coffee shop. Okay, that’s probably not true, but they are fun to have for both work and play.

For checking emails, surfing the web, or typing up that short story, you can get away with less power, weight, and screen size in your laptop. Beware however, as some of these are small because of the absence of a CD-RW, DVD±R or other hardware. Also, due to having less hardware to power, battery life is significantly increased in these lightweight portables.

When you’re purchasing your laptop, check for the following features:

  • Memory: Your laptop should have at least 1 gigabyte (GB) of RAM.
  • Processor speed: Look for a minimum of 1.6 GHz processor speed.
  • Size/weight: If you’re planning on traveling with your laptop often, a lighter weight laptop or netbook might be better.
  • Price: Set a budget that you're comfortable with — you can get pretty inexpensive laptops that work for most folks these days.
  • Keyboard/Mouse: Make sure the keyboard and mouse built into your laptop feel comfortable to you.
  • Monitor: Laptops come with different size monitors. A 15-inch monitor is comfortable for most people, but if you do work with higher-end images or watch videos, consider a larger monitor, but be aware that the larger the monitor, the larger and heftier the laptop.
  • Input ports and drives: Laptops might come with a built-in CD or DVD drive, USB ports for connecting peripherals and USB sticks, and ports to connect to scanners and printers.
  • Wireless capability: To connect to some wireless devices and networks, you need a laptop with wireless capability.
  • Included software: Some laptops come with utility programs such as antivirus software or productivity software such as Microsoft Works.
  • Manufacturer support: Check the warranty and technical support available.
  • Graphics and sound cards: If you want to use multimedia or game software, ask for more sophisticated sound and video features in your laptop.

    Titanic II sinks in harbor on maiden voyage from UK

    LONDON (AFP) — Most people would think twice before buying a boat named Titanic II. And sure enough, when Briton Mark Wilkinson took the 16-foot (4.8-meter) cabin cruiser out for its maiden voyage, it promptly sank.

    "If it wasn't for the harbormaster I would have gone down with the Titanic," Wilkinson, who had to be fished out of the sea at West Bay harbor in Dorset, told local media.

    "It's all a bit embarrassing and I got pretty fed up with people asking me if I had hit an iceberg."

    Wilkinson, in his 40s, had only recently bought the boat and brought it by road from his home in Birmingham for its first outing.

    After a successful fishing trip, things started to go wrong when he entered the harbor and the boat began taking on water. Wilkinson was forced to abandon ship and pictures showed him clinging to a rail before he was rescued.

    One eyewitness said:- "It wasn't a very big boat — I think an ice cube could have sunk it!"

    Google: Hundreds of Gmail accounts in U.S., Asia hacked

    By Rachel King | June 1, 2011, 1:52pm PDT
    Summary

    Hackers around the world are gaining more attention than usual in the last few months. Now Google has added another announcement to the pile that hundreds of Gmail accounts have been hacked recently.

    Hackers around the world are gaining more attention than usual in the last few months. Now Google has added another announcement to the pile that hundreds of Gmail accounts have been hacked recently.

    Now, Google affirms that the problem doesn’t rest with Gmail security but rather this scheme was a result of phishing and malware.

    Google spilled the details on Wednesday via its official blog:

    Through the strength of our cloud-based security and abuse detection systems*, we recently uncovered a campaign to collect user passwords, likely through phishing. This campaign, which appears to originate from Jinan, China, affected what seem to be the personal Gmail accounts of hundreds of users including, among others, senior U.S. government officials, Chinese political activists, officials in several Asian countries (predominantly South Korea), military personnel and journalists.

    The goal of this effort seems to have been to monitor the contents of these users’ emails, with the perpetrators apparently using stolen passwords to change peoples’ forwarding and delegation settings.

    Gmail users affected by this security mishap should have already been notified. Google’s security team outlined a number of steps that Gmail users can take to protect themselves, which should only take about “ten minutes.”

    Google recommended the following:

    * Use two-factor authentication;
    * Choose a strong password;
    * Watch for suspicious activity warnings in your Gmail account;
    * Check your settings for odd forwarding.

    Google gave a hat tip to the blog Contagio, which highlighted the risks in February.

    This attack attempt might seem like a small incident (which it certainly is in comparison to the problems with Sony’s PlayStation Network or even Apple and the MacDefender issue), but it’s a reminder that it’s always a good idea to take even just a few moments to ensure your online identity is safe.
