How famous Companies were named?

Adobe
The name came from the river Adobe Creek that ran behind the house of founder John Warnock.

Apache
It got its name because its founders got started by applying patches to code written for NCSA's httpd daemon. The result was 'A PAtCHy' server - thus, the name Apache.

Apple Computers
Favourite fruit of founder Steve Jobs. He was three months late in filing a name for the business, and he threatened to call his company Apple Computers if the other colleagues didn't suggest a better name by 5 o'clock.

Cisco
The name is not an acronym but an abbreviation of San Francisco. The company's logo reflects its San Francisco name heritage. It represents a stylized Golden Gate Bridge.

Google
The name started as a jockey boast about the amount of information the search-engine would be able to search. It was originally named 'Googol', a word for the number represented by 1 followed by 100 zeros. After founders - Stanford graduate students Sergey Brin and Larry Page presented their project to an angel investor, they received a cheque made out to ‘Google’.

Hotmail
Founder Jack Smith got the idea of accessing email via the web from a computer anywhere in the world. When Sabeer Bhatia came up with the business plan for the mail service, he tried all kinds of names ending in 'mail' and finally settled for Hotmail as it included the letters "html" - the programming language used to write web pages. It was initially referred to as HoTMaiL with selective upper casings.

Hewlett-Packard
Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard tossed a coin to decide whether the company they founded would be called Hewlett-Packard or Packard-Hewlett.

Intel
Bob Noyce and Gordon Moore wanted to name their new company ' Moore Noyce' but that was already trademarked by a hotel chain, so they had to settle for an acronym of INTegrated ELectronics.

Lotus
Mitch Kapor got the name for his company from the lotus position or 'padmasana.' Kapor used to be a teacher of Transcendental Meditation of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.

Microsoft
It was coined by Bill Gates to represent the company that was devoted to MICROcomputer SOFTware. Originally christened Micro-Soft, the '-' was removed later on.

Motorola
Founder Paul Galvin came up with this name when his company started manufacturing radios for cars. The popular radio company at the time was called Victrola.

Oracle
Larry Ellison and Bob Oats were working on a consulting project for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). The code name for the project was called Oracle (the CIA saw this as the system to give answers to all questions or something such).

Red Hat
Company founder Marc Ewing was given the Cornell lacrosse team cap (with red and white stripes) while at college by his grandfather. He lost it and had to search for it desperately. The manual of the beta version of Red Hat Linux had an appeal to readers to return his Red Hat if found by anyone!

SAP
"Systems, Applications, Products in Data Processing", formed by four ex-IBM employees who used to work in the 'Systems/Applications/Projects' group of IBM.

Sony
From the Latin word 'sonus' meaning sound, and 'sonny' a slang used by Americans to refer to a bright youngster.

Sun Microsystems
Founded by four Stanford University buddies, Sun is the acronym for Stanford University Network.

Xerox
The Greek root "xer" means dry. The inventor, Chestor Carlson , named his product Xerox as it was dry copying, markedly different from the then prevailing wet copying.

Yahoo!
The word was invented by Jonathan Swift and used in his book Gulliver's Travels. It represents a person who is repulsive in appearance and action and is barely human. Yahoo! founders Jerry Yang and David Filo selected the name because they considered themselves yahoos.

Michael Jackson memorial tickets for sale online

LOS ANGELES (AFP) — Tickets for Michael Jackson's memorial were advertized for sale on the Internet as the winners of a hugely over-subscribed online lottery were notified.
Some 1.6 million people registered to enter the draw for the event, hoping to be among 8,750 lucky fans chosen at random by a computer to receive a pair of tickets for Tuesday's service.
Late Sunday, dozens of adverts offering tickets for sale had begun to appear on the popular craigslist.org website, although most were swiftly flagged for removal. Tickets were also offered on online auction house eBay.com with starting bids ranging from 200 to 500 dollars.
Authorities on Friday pleaded against ticket scalpers seeking to cash in on the event.
Ticket winners who beat the 183-1 odds of being chosen will be given a wristband to wear when they are issued with their tickets in order to make it harder for scalpers.

Why Australia, Sri Lanka and West Indies are in one group

How the groups were made ? ICC World Twenty20 2009

The 12 teams competing in this year's World Twenty20 are the nine Full-Member countries and three Associates who made it to England through the qualifying tournament, which was held in Belfast. They have been divided into four groups of three each based on their seeding, which depended on their standings in the inaugural World Twenty20 in 2007 (for the teams that took part in it). Since India were champions they were seeded first, their opponents in the final, Pakistan, were ranked second, while the losing semi-finalists Australia and New Zealand were seeded third and fourth. The top four seeds were then put in four different groups for this year's tournament.
The best among the rest, South Africa, were seeded fifth and put in the same group, D, as the team seeded fourth -New Zealand - while Sri Lanka and England, the 6th and 7th seed, were placed in groups C and B. Had West Indies at least finished eighth in 2007, there would not have been a 'group of death' this year. But they did not even win a single game, losing to Bangladesh because of an inspired innings from Mohammad Ashraful, and were seeded 11 and placed in Group C. Bangladesh, who qualified for the Super Eights in 2007 but didn't win a game in that round, were eighth and put in India's group.
Group A - India (1), Bangladesh (8), Ireland (9) Group B - Pakistan (2), England (7). Netherlands (10) Group C - Australia (3), Sri Lanka (6) West Indies (11) Group D - New Zealand (4), South Africa (5), Scotland (12)
Each team will play the other in its group during the preliminary round and the top two will qualify for the Super Eights. What this means is that either Bangladesh or Ireland, or both, are assured of a place in the second stage, while one of Australia, Sri Lanka and West Indies will crash out after round one, leading to the possibility of another group of death in the next World Twenty20, in the Caribbean in 2010.
If two teams in a group have equal points at the end of the first round, the one with more wins will be placed higher. If they have equal points and the same number of wins, a likely scenario, then the team with the higher net run-rate will be ranked higher. Should net run-rate also fail to separate the sides, then the one with the higher number of wickets taken per balls bowled in the group stage in which results were achieved, will be preferred. And if the teams remain in a deadlock, then the winner of the group match between the sides will prevail. If all of the aforementioned tie-breakers fail, the teams will be separated by drawing lots.
And should the weather in England wreck all the three matches of a particular group, the top two seeded teams in the group will progress. No points, however, will be carried forward from the group stage into the Super Eights.
The Super Eights
The teams in the Super Eight will be designated as A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 C2, D1, D2 depending on which group they qualified from. If the top two seeds from a group qualify, they will be seeded 1 and 2 respectively for the Super Eight regardless of which team actually finished first and second in a group during the first round. For example, if Bangladesh are first and India are second in Group A, Bangladesh will still be A2 while India will remain A1 for the Super Eight because India were seeded 1 while Bangladesh were 8. However, if the third seeded team in the group knocks out a higher seed, it will take the place of the knocked-out opponent. For example, if Bangladesh and Ireland qualify from Group A, then Ireland will be A1 for the Super Eight stage. If India and Ireland qualify, then Ireland will be A2.
During the Super Eight, the teams will be split into two groups of four - A1, B2, C1 and D2 are in the first group, while A2, B1, C2 and D1 are in the second. Each team will play the others in its pool with the top two from each group qualifying for the semi-finals. If teams are tied on points in a Super Eight group then the same parameters which were used to break a tie in the preliminary stage will be used, the difference being that only the Super Eight matches will be taken into consideration for most wins, net run-rate etc.
If all of the matches of a Super Eight group are ruined by rain, the teams will be ranked on basis of most points, most wins, net run-rate during the group stage and the top two will go through. If the teams still cannot be separated the semi-finalists will be picked based on the original seeding for the tournament.
A one-over eliminator, or Super Over, will be used to break a tie in a semi-final, if one should occur. However, if weather prevents the Super Over from taking place after a tie, the team which progresses to the final will be determined by looking at who has the most wins, better net run-rate, higher number of wickets per balls, the only difference being that this time both group and Super Eight matches will be taken into consideration.
The final, however, has no such provisions. If the final is tied, the match will be decided by a one-over eliminator. If the eliminator cannot take place because of bad weather, then the two finalists will be declared joint winners.

Islamic Ring Tone Issue

Many people have the Adhaan and Qur’aan recitation as ring tones on their mobile phones.
This practice, while well intentioned, is not correct.
The purpose of the Adhaan is not to inform us that someone is phoning us.

Likewise the Qur’aan was not revealed to serve us as an alert tone.

How Much Should You Invest In Your Internet Business?

There's about a million and one reasons why I love Internet marketing.

It pays, of course, and that has to be important. It's fun too. I'm having a ball doing this and it's rare that someone can say that about their work.

But one of the things I love the most about Internet marketing is that it's democratic.

Anyone can do it. And I really do mean anyone.

That makes a huge difference.

Usually, people thinking of starting their own business already have money. They need to have it. There are offices to rent, equipment to buy, employees to pay, and so on. Those start-up costs -- and the fear of losing them -- have put off so many entrepreneurs.

That means opportunity is often only available to those who have already enjoyed it in the past.

Creating an Internet business though doesn't have to cost a dime. Blogger and Wordpress.com both give away websites for free, including hosting. Design templates can be free, social media marketing costs nothing but keystrokes and ad programs like AdSense pay you to join them.

It is possible to start building a six-figure Internet business without a dime in start-up funds. It will cost you time but it won't cost you cash.

But once you start earning I don't recommend that you continue not investing financially in your business. A free blog is fine but buying your own domain will make it easier to market. A free template can look nice but hiring a designer will give you a unique brand. And while trial and error will always be a part of your business, the faster you learn the ropes, the sooner you can start making real money. That's true of any business. Even a kid with a lemonade stand needs to learn how much sugar to add to the water and the best place to set up shop.

Internet marketing doesn't demand money. But like any business, the more you're willing to put in, the more you're able to get out.

Blogs on Net

Internet link fails at blogger conference in Berlin
More than 1,000 technology-obsessed bloggers gathered Wednesday for a twittering conference in Berlin - and promptly lost what they needed most of all: their internet connections.
The annual event, re:publica, brings together Germans who share their innermost thoughts via blogs, or online diaries. Many employ Twitter, an internet service allowing them to type out minute-by- minute announcements of what they are thinking and doing."Wi-Fi will be available soon," announced a reassuring message over the stage at the Friedrichstadtpalast venue as the talkfest began.
A wireless local network was supposed to have allowed all 1,400 participants to connect to the web as they talked. Most participants just laughed and shut down their laptops, but one man groaned. "It's like the 1990s again," he grumbled. The bulk of participants were younger men and about half of them arrived at the event wielding either a video camera or a notebook computer, ready to create podcasts and simultaneous blogs about the conference. The three-day event is to discuss the future of web communities. An organizer, Markus Beckedahl, said the event had doubled in size since it began in 2007, with 700 bloggers attending.

The Great Wall of China 'even longer'

The Great Wall of China is even greater than previously thought, according to the first detailed survey to establish the length of the ancient barricade.
A two-year government mapping study found that the wall spans 8,850km (5,500 miles) - until now, the length was commonly put at about 5,000km.
Previous estimates of its length were mainly based on historical records.
Infra-red and GPS technologies helped locate some areas concealed over time by sandstorms, state media said.
The project found that there were wall sections of 6,259km, 359km of trenches, and 2,232km of natural defensive barriers such as hills and rivers.
The study was carried out by the State Administration of Cultural Heritage and the State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping.
Barricade
Experts said the newly-discovered sections of the wall were built during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), and stretch from Hu Mountain in northern Liaoning province to Jiayu Pass in western Gansu province.

Akhtar, Symonds seek career revival

When Pakistan take on Australia in the first match of their one-day series here on Wednesday, Andrew Symonds and Shoaib Akhtar will face what could be the last chance to revive their careers.

Australian all-rounder Symonds, who was previously told to seek counselling after a series of alcohol-related incidents, has made a comeback to the squad after being dropped for a recent one-day series in South Africa.

Shoaib Akhtar has played only three Twenty20 internationals and two one-day matches in the last 16 months, which saw him mainly sidelined for fitness and disciplinary problems. He was axed after taking just one wicket in two one-dayers against Sri Lanka in February, a tour that ended after an attack on Sri Lanka's team in the Pakistani city of Lahore.

How to Be Beautiful Without Makeup

Steps for Looking Beutiful for Life.
1. Shower and wash yourself daily. Having good hygiene is the first step to being beautiful. Make sure to wash yourself everyday with water and soap and use only shampoos and conditioners for your hair.

2. Moisturize your skin. Any type of body lotion should do. You can apply lotion during the mornings and before you go to bed at night.

3.Take good care of your facial skin. Don't freak out over acne, everybody gets pimples and it's perfectly normal. To prevent acne, use a gentle blemish wash.(These can be purchased at any drug stores.) Drinking plenty of water and eating right can also help prevent acne.
Use clear chap-stick. Stick to medicated or normal chapsticks, Don't use smackers or anything like that.

4. Wear appropriate modest clothing. Wear clothing that suits your skin tone and brings out your best features.

5. Keep your nails trim and clean. Nails can be left alone, trim and file though.

6. Getting manicures may seem glamourous, but it isn't good for your nails at all.

7. Let your hair air dry. Blow drying is bad for your hair and can dry it out.

8. Keep your hair natural. Don't straighten or curl your hair because it harms your hair and people always look better with their natural look--even if they don't believe it.

9. Eat properly. Having good nutrition keeps your body and mind in good shape.

Three key areas will increase your Adsense earnings.

1- Impressions

Impressions are the number of times your webpages with Adsense ads have been viewed. You can increase Impressions by increasing traffic (preferably targeted traffic) to your webpages. Some of the best ways to increase targeted traffic to your webpages include:

- create more webpages, with relevant, focused content

- create more links to your webpages

- list your website/s under relevant categories in more directories

- set up a directory of relevant sites on your website and accept relevant reciprocal links

- write relevant articles, with your site information in the 'resource box' at the end of each article, and submit them to article directories

2- Clickthroughs

Clickthroughs are the percentage of viewers who click on your Adsense ads. You can increase Clickthroughs by increasing the relevance of Adsense ads on your site, and by tweaking the format and placing of your ads.

Although you can't dictat which Adsense ads show on your site, you can influence the relevance of the ads by maintaining a tighrly focused website. If every page on your site focuses tightly on the site topic, its more likely that the Adsense ads will too. For example, if every page of your site is about fishing, and the word 'fishing' appears several times on every page, its likely that your Adsense ads will relate to fishing.

The best way to tweak your ad format and placement is to invest in an Adsense Tracker, and test, test, test! People who have done this tend to suggest that the best format is the large rectangle, with background and border the same color as the page behind it, so that the ad blends into the page. The best placement is towards the center or top left of the first screen of the page. Try these suggestions first, and then track and test, to be sure of what works best for your pages.

3- Effective CPM

Effective CPM is a measure of your average earnings, per thousand clicks. You can increase your Effective CPM by selecting topics that attract high bids from Adsense advertisers, and building pages and whole websites on higher paying topics.

Although Google doesn't release information on Adsense bids, you can get a good idea of the top paying topics by looking at information on Adwords bids, or, for that matter, bids on pay-per-click search engines like Overture. There are a number of keyword research tools available, both free and paid, that can help you find high paying topics.

The Formula

So now you have the basics of increasing your Adsense income. Its a deceptively simple formula:

- Build pages and websites on high paying topics for the best Effective CPM.

- Format and place your Adsense ads for maximum Clickthroughs.

- Promote your sites to drive targeted traffic to your Adsense webpages for maximum impressions.

How to Rank High in Google Quickly For Your Desired Keywords

Like anybody involved in internet marketing and web sites development I also like to rank high in Google search results for the keywords I consider useful after I have done some keywords research.

And like anybody else I know it isn’t that easy to reach this target. Google is the most important search engine of the internet, and the biggest source of traffic existing at the moment. The competition to get good results in the Google search engine is the higher existing too.

So to get these high rankings quickly we need to know, and to do, what Google likes and considers good.

One of the best possible ways is to use the big sites that Google likes a lot and indexes high for all the keywords and add there links to your own web site.

An example is Squidoo, that allows you to create your own pages about the topic you like. Squidoo often ranks high in Google search results for competitive keywords, so you can create your pages on Squidoo, that are called “lenses”, related to your desired keywords, targeting these keywords in the name and URL of the lens, in the text content you add to it, and in the link back to your own web site.

Google also likes a lot the big social networks web sites, like MySpace as example, and having links with your desired keywords to your own web site posted in MySpace can also help a lot your site to get indexed fast by Google and to get higher rankings for your keywords.

Squidoo and MySpace are just two examples of sites that Google loves and that can let you easily add links to your site. It is also important to notice that these sites are very good for anybody that wants to have links from big sites to their new sites because both of them have content about any possible topic, they are very generic sites and have pages about anything you can imagine.

I will show you other good sites, but before I want to give you another good tip that can make the difference.

Having the keywords you are targeting in your domain name can help a lot. If the main domain name composed only by the keywords is not available than you can select a variation of it, perhaps adding another word that gives anyway a meaning to the domain.

Now let’s see some other good sites you can use to rank higher on Google for your desired keywords.

Two possibilities are inside Google itself, or better said inside the Google network. But they could require more work to be successful.

I refer to Blogger and to Youtube, they are both free Google services.

Blogger allows you to create free blogs, and again you can select any topic you like without problem and Google loves blogs. The problem is that a blog must be continually updated to get and keep good rankings in search engines and Google in particular, so this will require more work than a Squidoo lens or a post on a social network.

Youtube also is loved both by Google and internet surfers, but you will need to be able to create a video to use it, than you can add the link inside the video itself to promote your web site to the viewers of the video, and in the description, to be crawled by Google and the other search engines.

The ones above are only some of the big, good sites that can help you a lot to get high rankings quickly for your desired keywords in Google, but there are many others you can find making some researches in Google.
